[List Updated] While WordPress, Movable Type and B2evolution are considered favorites in term of blogging, there are other type of open source called Open Source Content Management Systems (CMS).

And for newbies, CMS according to wiki:

Open Source Content Management Systems such as a document management system (DMS) is a computer application used to manage work flow needed to collaboratively create, edit, review, index, search, publish and archive various kinds of digital media and electronic text.

These are soms CMS that are considered favorities:

  • Joomla is considered as one of the most powerful Open Source Content Management Systems on the planet. It is used all over the world for everything from simple websites to complex corporate applications. Joomla is easy to install, simple to manage, and reliable.
  • WordPress  is definitely one of the most popular open source blogging software that can be used as a CMS. In combination with some plugins and tweaking you can turn your blog into a very powerful CMS. Do I need to say more?
  • Nucleus CMS  is an open-source blogging software written in PHP and MySql.  Nucleus CMS allows you to manage multiple web blogs with multiple authors, drafts and schedule future posts.
  • MODx is an open source PHP Application Framework that allows you to take control of your online content. It empowers developers and advanced users to give as much control as desired to whomever they desire for day-to-day website content maintenance chores.
  • Drupal is software that allows an individual or a community of users to easily publish, manage and organize a great variety of content on a website.
